As parents, we notice everything; from the way our child smiles to the tiniest sign that something might be off. But when it comes to their dental health, it’s not always easy to tell when it’s time to schedule that next visit.

You want to protect their growing smile, ease their fears, and build healthy habits early on, but where do you start? At Bagley Family Dental, we understand how much love goes into every decision you make for your child. That’s why we’re here to help you recognize the signs that it’s time for a checkup before small concerns turn into bigger problems.

5 Signs It’s Time to Schedule Your Child's Dental Checkup

Sometimes it’s a good idea to call our dental office and schedule a checkup for your child. This gives them the best chance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime.

We recommend an appointment for any of the following:

  1. Complaints of tooth pain or sensitivity — If your child tells you they have a toothache or it hurts when they eat, drink, or brush their teeth, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment. Tooth pain or sensitivity can indicate decay, gum issues, or enamel wear.
  2. Changes in their smile or bite — We think a dental visit is needed if you notice gaps, crowding, or an unusual bite pattern. It’s normal for your child’s teeth and jaws to shift, but early orthodontic intervention can make future treatments easier and more effective.
  3. More than six months have passed — We recommend bringing your child into our office for a routine exam and checkup twice a year. This allows us to remove plaque and tartar from their teeth and gums and catch any dental issues before they worsen. So, if it has been more than six months since their last appointment, contact us as soon as possible.
  4. Persistent bad breath or bleeding gums — When your child regularly has bad breath or bleeding gums, it could indicate poor oral hygiene habits or other concerns. Bringing them to see us can help us determine the issue and get them back on track.
  5. Before a significant milestone — Whether it’s family photos, a special birthday, or time to head back to school, you can boost your child’s confidence with a checkup and cleaning.
