Your heart starts racing just thinking about your upcoming dental appointment. You've rescheduled twice already, and you know you can't put it off much longer.
At Bagley Dental, we want you to feel comfortable and confident during your appointments, and we offer these eight tips for managing dental anxiety.
- Communicate your fears. — Don't suffer in silence. Tell your dental team about your specific anxieties, such as the sound of the drill, fear of pain, or feeling trapped in the chair. At Bagley Dental, we've heard it all, and sharing your concerns helps us tailor your experience to your needs.
- Schedule thoughtfully. — Book your appointment at a time when you feel most relaxed and comfortable. Some people prefer morning appointments to avoid all-day anxiety, while others do better later in the day when they've had time to prepare mentally.
- Practice deep breathing. — Simple breathing exercises can significantly reduce anxiety. Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Practice this before and during your appointment to stay calm.
- Bring headphones. — Listening to calming music or your favorite podcasts can help distract from dental sounds and create a more comfortable environment.
- Consider nitrous oxide (laughing gas). — Nitrous oxide is a safe, effective option for managing dental anxiety. At Bagley Dental in Greeley, we offer nitrous to help patients relax. It works quickly, wears off fast, and allows you to drive yourself home afterward.
- Establish hand signals. — Work out a system with your dentist where you can signal if you need a break. Knowing you have control and can pause the procedure anytime often reduces anxiety significantly.
- Bring a support person. — Many offices allow a trusted friend or family member to accompany you, especially for longer procedures. Having someone familiar nearby can provide tremendous comfort.
- Start small and build confidence. — If you haven't been to the dentist in years, consider starting small with a consultation or cleaning rather than jumping into major work. Building positive experiences gradually can help reduce future anxiety.
