You need dental work. The cost is more than you expected. Your dentist mentions CareCredit. You pull out your phone and start the application, and then you stop. What if you get denied? What are the terms? What happens next?

If that sounds familiar, here is what the process actually looks like.

Applying for CareCredit

You can apply for CareCredit online, through their mobile app, or at your dentist's office. The application takes about ten minutes and asks for basic information: your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and income. CareCredit uses a soft credit inquiry for the initial check, which means applying does not affect your credit score.

In most cases, you receive a decision within minutes.

If You Are Approved

If approved, you receive a credit limit and can use your CareCredit account immediately. There is no waiting period. You can apply it to the treatment you are planning right away.

CareCredit offers promotional financing on qualifying purchases of $200 or more. Depending on the amount, options may include 6, 12, 18, or 24 months of promotional financing.

Longer terms are available for larger treatment costs. It is important to read the terms carefully, especially what happens if you don't pay the balance within the promotional period; you will typically be responsible for the accrued interest.

If You Are Not Approved

A denial is not the end of the conversation. CareCredit offers a reconsideration process where you can provide additional information. Your dental office may also offer other financing options or in-house payment plans. It is worth asking.
